4 Ways To Practice Self Care During The Election Season

2020 will be remembered as an unpredictable year when we remade how we structure our lives and interact with each other. We’re being called on to think about what changes we need to make in our personal lives, businesses and communities. And now finally, after at least two years of nonstop presidential campaigning in just a few hours (maybe even days) we’ll know the results of our next president.

We’ve almost made it to the end year and a little self-care couldn’t hurt. It’s important for each of us to practice good self-care for what will likely be an emotional rollercoaster in the days to follow.

Self-care is any activity that contributes to your overall physical and mental health by offering relaxation, detoxification, inspiration, or increased connection to yourself and your loved ones. Here are 4 Ways to Practice Self Care during and after the Election Season.

1. Turn the news/ social media off. I understand the elections are on and you want to stay informed however, too much media can increase stress and anxiety levels. It’s okay to turn off the news. I assure you the information will still be there when you return. Instead change the channel to a different show, streaming or movie.

When you do decide to check in, be mindful of your source. Listen to messenger that you perceive as calming and will not cause you to be emotionally charged.

2. Exercise. Get up and move. This pandemic has had a big enough impact on our social lives so as you notice the stress and overwhelm creeping in set the intention to get up and move. Go for a walk or run, engage in a workout. Be sure to stay active! Challenge yourself to engage in some form of activity for at least 15 minutes or more daily.

3. Gratitude. Set the intention to hold love and lite in your heart. Name 2 things that you’re grateful for. Set the intention to carry those things with you throughout your day.

Think of something you are grateful for. It could be anything, large or small. Consider, for instance, feeling grateful for waking up in a warm bed, having hot water for your morning shower, or having a good cup of coffee to start your day. You might be grateful for having a job, for your family, for supportive colleagues or the students in your class. Whatever it is, direct your mind to go there.

Reflect on how it makes you feel. Take a few moments to sit with that feeling before moving on to the rest of your day.

4. Make sleep part of your self-care routine. Sleep can have a huge effect on how you feel both emotionally and physically. Not getting enough can even cause major health issues. But stress and other distractions can wreak havoc on our sleep. We thrive on routine so try to do the same things each night before bed so your body knows the cues for sleep. Think warm bath, a milky drink, reading/listening to music and brushing teeth/taking off make-up.
